The third-tier team fought their hardest and eliminated Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey

Real Madrid were knocked out of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night by a 10-man third-tier team. Alcoyano is their name and don’t you forget it.

Zinedine Zidane’s men were poor and the hosts were brave and deserved their triumph on Spain’s east coast.

Madrid had plenty of the ball in the early stages but not much penetration, until Eder Militao headed home from Marcelo’s cross shortly before the break.

Lucas Vazquez threatened from distance but Jose Juan, 41, made a comfortable save.

The game was petering out but Solbes escaped Vinicius Junior from a corner to level with 10 minutes on the clock and revitalise the hosts.

They suffered a brutal blow when Ramon was dismissed in extra time for a late tackle on Casemiro, his second booking, but kept their heads above water.

Juanan grabbed the winner with 10 minutes left after finishing well at the near post to stun Madrid.

Zidane’s team battled to bring the game to penalties but Alcoyano did well to hold them off and reach the last 16 of the tournament, on a thrilling night.
