They beat Mexico in extra-time to finish third despite Ronaldo's absence

Pepe struck to equalise before Adrien Silva netted what proved to be the winner

Portugal came third in the Confederations Cup after beating Mexico 2-1 in extra-time, in a match they did not miss Cristiano Ronaldo in. The Madrid forward is already on holiday, leaving after his side were beaten in the semi-finals of the tournament by Chile. Fernando Santos' side, accused of super-conservatism during the tournament, were more attacking here and had various chances to score, including a missed penalty.
