Luis Suarez, Leo Messi and Aleix Vidal got the goals

Barça are now 14 points clear of Real Madrid in La Liga

Barcelona hammered Real Madrid on Saturday with a second half masterclass at the Santiago Bernabeu which moves them 14 points clear of Zinedine Zidane’s side, who have a game in hand.

Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Aleix Vidal got the goals as Barca extended their unbeaten run to 25 games in all competitions and their lead at the top of La Liga to nine points after Atletico Madrid lost to Espanyol on Friday.

Valencia could cut that gap to eight points but regardless of how they do against Villarreal it will be a happy Christmas for Ernesto Valverde.

A cagey first half was won by the goalkeepers with Keylo Navas keeping out a brilliant Paulinho effort and Marc-Andre ter Stegen stopping Cristiano Ronaldo.

Barca saw a penalty shout turned down when Dani Carvajal caught Gerard Pique and Thomas Vermaelen was booked for stopping Luka Modric breaking through.

Karim Benzema then hit the post with a header before Barca took over in the second half.

A brilliant piece of play from Sergio Busquets created space for Ivan Rakitic in the middle.

The Croatian strode forward and fed Sergi Roberto, who squared for Luis Suarez to open the scoring, the Uruguayan scoring his seventh goal in his last six league games.

Barca doubled their lead from the penalty spot, Carvajal handling on the line from Paulinho after Suarez had hit the post and seen another shot saved by Navas.

Messi fired home from 12 yards to leave Madrid with a mountain to climb in the game and the league.

With a man less, Madrid did press and Ter Stegen was called into action on several occasions, making one particularly good save from substitute Gareth Bale.

And on stoppage time, Aleix Vidal made it three, his shot squirming under Navas after Messi had tied Marcelo in knots.
