LaLiga isn't happy but El Clasico goes ahead on the 18th December

El Clásico tiene nueva fecha oficial: 18 de diciembre / | Perform

The league doesn't believe the Competition Committee has the right to select the date and has released an official statement

As expected by many, LaLiga have refused to accept the Competition Committee's new date for the first 'El Clasico' of the season. As revealed by SPORT last Sunday, the league intends to take this matter to the CSD and through the court system but the date of the match won't change as to not further disrupt supporter's plans.

In an official statement, LaLiga set out their objections to the date in question:

·      LaLiga insist that in cases where a match is forced to be postponed, the contest is moved to the next available date, which in this case would be the 4th December and not the 18th.

·      LaLiga state there is no rule or right that the teams are allowed to choose the date for a match which has been postponed due to exceptional circumstances. LaLiga believe that power should never be handed to the clubs as they could, in theory, decide to play the match on the final day of the season which would then impact the integrity of the competition.

·      There is no right or law which allows LaLiga to be bypassed when it comes to the organising of football matches, especially one such as 'El Clasico' which generates a lot of money in television deals. As the deals are now done as a collective unit, any loss of earnings would impact the entire league and not just the two teams in question.

·      And lastly LaLiga believes the date in question - 18th December - goes against an agreement made with the RFEF in which the league would be unable to schedule matches on week's dedicated to the Copa del Rey. Even less so when there's an available date which wouldn't coincide with the cup competition. Any match, especially of this magnitude, would then impact the television money on offer to sides playing in the cup that same week.

LaLiga believe allowing 'El Clasico' take place on the same week as the Copa del Rey, and the precedent it would set in allowing teams the power to decide when rearranged fixtures were to be played, would do irreparable damage to Spanish football.
