Arnaut Danjuma scored the only goal of the game as Villarreal beat Bayern Munich 1-0 to give themselves the advantage at the halfway mark of this Champions League quarterfinal tie.
Danjuma struck in the eighth minute to give Villarreal a historic win against the German champions at the Estadio Ceramica.
Francis Coquelin had a second goal ruled out for Villarreal, who may come to regret a string of missed chances when they travel to Germany next week.
Bayern racked up 22 shots of their own but their front four of Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller and Kingsley Coman were unable to breach the home side's defence.
The two sides meet again at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, with the winners facing Liverpool or Benfica in the semifinal.
Liverpool have a 3-1 lead in that tie from the first leg in Portugal on Tuesday.
