Atletico 2-3 Liverpool: Two goals & a red card on bittersweet night for Griezmann

| sport

The French striker was on a hat-trick when he was sent off for a high foot

Antoine Griezmann scored two before being sent off as Atletico Madrid were beaten 3-2 by Liverpool in the Champions League at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday.

Mohamed Salah scored the winning goal from the penalty spot late on after Atletico had fought back from two goals down.

There was still time for more drama, too, as Atletico had a late penalty decision overturned after the referee re-watched the incident on the pitch-side monitor.

James Milner and Naby Keita had given Liverpool a two-goal advantage early on before a Griezmann brace had Atletico level by half-time.

Griezmann was sent off for a high boot early in the second half, though, and Salah slotted the winner after Mario Hermoso fouled Diogo Jota.

The three points give Liverpool a handsome advantage at the top of the group. They have nine points from their three games.

Atletico, meanwhile, are level on four points with Porto, while Milan are yet to get off the mark.

Next up for Diego Simeone's side is a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's side started quickly on Tuesday. Salah jinked inside past three defenders in the eighth minute and his effort was deflected in by Milner.

Five minutes later, Liverpool had a second when Keita smashed home on the volley from the edge of the box.

That only served to open the game up and in the 20th minute, after a spell of pressure, Atletico pulled themselves back into the game.

Liverpool could not clear the ball and Koke's shot was directed into the goal by Griezmann.

Atletico were level before the break when a stunning solo run from Joao Felix teed up Griezmann, whose needed one touch to set himself up and a second to slide the ball past Alisson.

But Griezmann's night ended prematurely just after the break when he was shown a straight red card for planting a high boot into Roberto Firmino's head.

Hermoso's clumsy challenge on Jota as the ball dropped into the box then set Salah up to score the winning goal from the spot.

Atletico thought they had a chance to level again when Jota brought down Jose Gimenez at the other end, but the referee reversed the decision to give the penalty upon review.
