De Ligt's 150 million release clause at Juve not active until 2022
The Dutch defender requested the clause in negotiiations with the Italian club
The release clause in Matthijs de Ligt's contract with Juventus will not become active until 2022, according to television channel Sky Sport.
De Ligt joined Juve this week from Ajax in a deal worth around 75 million euros and requested that his contract with the club included a 150 million euros release clause.
The Old Lady accepted the terms, even though release clauses are not mandatory in Italy, but the clause will not become active until he's completed three years in Turin.
Therefore, if De Ligt doesn't adapt to his new club and wants to leave in 2020 or 2021, any club wanting to sign him will have to negotiate with Juve.
However, after June 2022, Juve wouldn't be able to do anything if there was a suitor willing to pay as much as 150 million.
Juve fought off competition from Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona to sign De Ligt, with agent Mino Raiola pocketing 10 million in commission as part of the deal.
De Ligt will earn a base of 7.5 million euros per season, with the possibility of earning as much as 12 million based on a number of incentives and bonuses.
