The defender will join the German club in the summer

It's now official. Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth 80 million euros -- which is the defender's release clause.

Lucas, 23, can play at either left-back or centre-back and will join the German champions in the summer, where he's signed a deal until 2024.

“I’m very happy we’ve been able to sign one of the best defenders in the world, a World Cup winner, in Lucas Hernandez,” said Bayern's sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.

“Lucas can play both in central defence and at left-back. Moreover, Lucas will continue our great tradition of French footballers and improve our team.”

Lucas may not play for Atletico again. During his medical, it was revealed he has sustained damage to a ligament in his right knee.

Atletico have agreed that he will undergo surgery immediately and he may not play again this season before leaving for the Bundesliga.
