The German club have paid the midfielder's release clause

Gomez was touted as a bright prospect at Barcelona

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the signing of Barcelona youngster Sergio Gomez, paying €3 million to land the midfielder.

The move has been in the making for the last week and Barça's attempts to persuade him to stay fell on deaf ears.

Gomez, 17, seriously flirted with the chance to move to Manchester City last summer, but in the end decided to reject the option to move to England.

As recently as te weekend he played for Barça's U19 team in their 3-0 win against Damm, starting the game before being taken off in the 78th minute.

In theory, he will form part of Dortmund's U19 team although he has also been told he will take part in first team training and have chances to play for the senior side.

Gomez has signed a deal until 2022 and was won round by the idea of quick progression, as has been with the case with the likes of Ousmane Dembele and now Jadon Sancho at Dortmund.

"Sergio Gómez is one of the best players in the world for his age," said sporting director Michael Zorc.

"We have been interested in him for a long time and we are happy he has chosen Borussia Dortmund, despite the other European clubs that were in for him."

"Sergio will train with the first team from day one, although until the summer he will be with out U19 team."
