The Belgian set up Jesus and then scored himself from the penno spot

Manchester City came from behind to stun Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 first leg on Wednesday night, with Sergio Ramos sent off.

Isco sent Madrid ahead after an hour, against the run of play, with a good finish after Vinicius Junior set him up.

It looked like record 13-time European champions Madrid were back to their usual form in the competition after last season’s blip but Man City proved otherwise.

Kevin de Bruyne crossed for Jesus to head home and then the Belgian slotted home from the penalty spot after a foolish foul by Dani Carvajal on Raheem Sterling.

Then Ramos was sent off late on and banned for the second leg after bringing down Jesus on the edge of the box as he ran through on goal.

The first half had been cagey. Thibaut Courtois saved well from Jesus, Ederson from Benzema and Vinicius slipped when he should have netted the rebound.

At the end of the first half Ramos nearly scored an own goal, when he deflected Jesus’s shot towards his own net, but Casemiro cleared it off the line.

It was a warning sign for what was to come.
