The prize money for the Champions League semifinalists is huge

As well as sporting glory, the Champions League quarterfinal between Barcelona and Bayern Munich also brings huge financial rewards for the winners.

In a season when clubs around the world have seen their income hit by the coronavirus pandemic, progressing in the Champions League becomes more important than ever.

Beating Napoli last week guaranteed Barça a further 10.5 million euros in prize money, the amount awarded to the eight quarter-finalists in the competition.

Reaching the semifinal would pocket the club a further 12 million euros, while qualification for the final would bring another 15 million euros.

Winning it outright would then add four million more. It would also mean qualification to the European Super Cup, which adds a bonus of at least 3.5 million euros -- four million euros if you win it.

By reaching the semifinals last season, Barça made the most money in the competition. The Catalans' campaign raised 117 million euros, while winners Liverpool earned 111 million euros.

The reason for the difference is that money is paid out based on various factors: prize money (which includes fees for winning group stage games), co-efficient, local television money etc etc.
