Will Dembele be sent to the stands if he doesn't renew? Laporta responds

| sport

The France forward is in the final eight months of his contract with Barcelona

Barcelona took a strong stance when Ilaix Moriba would not renew his contract, refusing to let him play for any of the club's teams, and he was finally sold to RB Leipzig.

It was a clear message to other youngsters that they would not heed to financial demands, but will that same tactic be deployed with Ousmane Dembele and Ansu Fati, who, like Ilaix was, are also out of contract next summer.

Speaking to SPORT, Laporta addressed the Dembele issue first: "There's a really good relationship with him, we're speaking with his agent. Ousmane wants to stay. He's a player we like, someone who can be fundamental in the team's improvement.

"That's how the coach sees it. If injuries respect him. We always knew that he was in the final year of his deal."

Therefore, it seems Dembele, at this stage, will not be threatened with a seat in the stands, while the same goes for Ansu Fati.

"His case is the same as Dembele's," Laporta added. "He has a contract, he wants to stay and we're negotiating."

Laporta indicated that the club also hopes to tie down Gavi and Ronald Araujo to new long-term details and explained "Sergi Roberto is done, it's just (the final) details. The captains have made a huge gesture, reducing their salary, giving up bonuses. It's important because it's a lot of money and they didn't have to do it. We're very grateful."
