Why Barcelona have not removed themselves from the Super League

The Catalans have not made a statement after all the English clubs pulled out

Many are asking why Barcelona have not broken free of the Super League, like the English clubs. The Blaugrana don’t want to convey that they are unaligned with discontent with UEFA and FIFA. They don’t care if the new reality is called the Super League or anything else. It’s not about pride. They are open to sit and talk but don’t want things to get confused by quitting the Super League. The opposite. The club believes things have to change and they have to change now.

Barça are not immune to all the pressure to issue a statement distancing themselves from the Super League project. However, they believe that such action could be seen from UEFA as a rectification. As if, from one day to the next, Barça gave up a long list of issues that it considers unfair and intolerable. In other words, the problem is neither UEFA nor FIFA, but their way of proceeding and their exorbitant privileges.

The club believes that, in the current economic framework, that UEFA keep 40% of profits is out of place. In addition, it is the aforementioned organizations that make and undo the calendar at will. All this without taking into account that the protagonists of this business, the players, are paid by the clubs. Hence, Barça is clear that teams must increase their power when deciding whether or not to give up their players for international tournaments. "Why do we always have to fit into what UEFA and FIFA demand?" the club protests.

In the coming days, Barcelona will speak. They will do it to try to bring order to their position. With or without the Super League, at Aristides Maillol they want all of these endless situations that are harmful to big clubs in Europe to be addressed. In other words, the time for words is over and now it is time for UEFA and FIFA to accept what should be the new reality.

GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH CEFERIN

In recent weeks contact between Joan Laporta and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has been frequent. The top Barça president has conveyed to his counterpart at UEFA how the club is doing and the financial needs it has. Not only Barça, but 99% of the great teams of the ‘Old Continent’. Laporta has conveyed to Ceferin the conviction that if the main clubs in Europe go under, so will the rest of the 'minor' teams as a consequence.

The relationship between Laporta and Ceferin is good and is shown by the recent words of the Slovenian. "The club who has disappointed me the least is Barça. Laporta became president two months ago and there was little he could do," said the UEFA leader. And, as long as UEFA understands that it must back down from their ambitions, the Barça president will always maintain a constructive and conciliatory attitude. Otherwise, the club will follow the path it deems necessary. The only thing Laporta is looking out for is the best for Barça.
