What Ronald Araujo wants from Barça in his renewal

| sport

The Uruguayan defender has a contract that ends in June 2023

Ronald Araujo has become the leader of Barcelona’s defence, despite his age. His eruption into the first team has been huge. Mateu Alemany is now prioritising his contract renewal. Conversations have begun. His demand is that he is paid his worth, although not an amount that would make him one of the highest-paid players at the club.

Araujo’s contract is up in 2023 and Barcelona want him to stay. His current wage is one of the lowest, around 900k a year, despite the fact he’s a first-team starter. The Uruguayan understands Barcelona’s situation and isn’t asking for as much as the most veteran players, but he does want to get onto the scale of those who have recently renewed. It’s evident there’s room to negotiate, but the number is around there.

Barcelona offered less than this six million euros a season, some sources say around half. Araujo will not renew for that, and expect a closer offer to that figure in the coming weeks. Araujo is alert to Barcelona’s transfer movements too, if they sign another top-level defender, and what his salary might be.

The player and his agent have a good relationship with Barcelona, they have always spoken openly, and have explained there is a lot of interest in Araujo from the Premier League. Liverpool, United and Chelsea are ready to make an offer if he does not renew - something the player is not contemplating.
