What is going on with Miralem Pjanic?
The Bosnian has not been at his best and only participated in 40 per cent of minutes
Nobody knows what’s happening with Miralem Pjanic, but everyone thinks he’s better than what he’s been able to show so far. The Bosnian did not appear against Elche, even in the second half after warming up for quite some time.
Pjanic has played 40 per cent of the minutes available this season and not provided a single assist or goal. The Bosnian has gone 15 months without scoring. His last was in 2019 against Bologna. While Barca didn’t sign him for his goal, it’s hard not to compare that to what De Jong has begun to offer.
Pjanic’s problem is that even in his general play he hasn’t been particularly impressive. He’s shown his excellent technique but not consistently. Physically he’s not as good as his team-mates, creating a cycle. He doesn’t play because he’s not up to the pace, he’s not up to the pace because he’s not playing.
At first he railed against the situation but now he seems more resigned to it than anything else. Koeman would do well to get him back onside because he can be useful when at his best.
