The format of the competition will be very similar to the NBA

Before closing the door behind him on his way out, Josep Maria Bartomeu had one last big announcement to make: Barcelona have accepted a proposal to take part in a future European Super League, a competition that will unite the best teams on the Old Continent. But what more do we know about this new tournament?

*note: the proposal needs to be ratified by the incoming president and then voted on by club members before being passed.

The idea of of a European Super League has long been on the table but appears to be gathering momentum. The big clubs in Spain, England, Germany and France have given their approval to a new competition that in no case would start before September 2022.

The model of the competition would be very similar to the NBA, with home and away games between 18 participants. While that amount of teams is the initial idea, it's still not clear if there will be 18 teams for definite as more clubs with potential are interested in forming part of this new elitist project.

In England, they report that Real Madrid and Atletico, along with Barça, would join the competition. PSG, Inter, Bayern, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool are also keen on the idea. FIFA also consider it a great initiative, although UEFA are against the competition, which would be in conflict with the Champions League and the Europa League.

Barça's acceptance of a place in the competition has still not been ratified, something which will have to happen at the next AGM. What is on track is that JP Morgan would be the main investor, generating more revenue for the clubs that take part.

Remember that the president of La Liga, Javier Tebas, thinks the idea is a farce and said as much on social media after Bartomeu's announcement on Tuesday.

Tebas wrote: "Unfortunate @jmbartomeu statement on his last day about @FCBarcelona joining a weak and imaginary competition which would be their ruin. It confirms his ignorance about the football industry. Sad end for a president with successes and lately many mistakes."
