The coach spoke about his bad luck in the competition in terms of the format

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said that he prefers the old Spanish Super Cup to the new format.

“It’s always been the first title of the season, the game that opens the campaign, and that seemed good to me,” said the coach at his delayed press conference.

“They’ve changed the format of the Super Cup and we’ll see how it is. They are attractive games for the fans but there’s only one league champion and one cup champion.

“It’s my fifth Super Cup. In my first three my team and to play away from home at the league champions. And in these two my team, the league champions, has had to play at a neutral venue. I preferred the old format but the Federation decide.”

Valverde was also not overly keen when asked about the tournament location, Saudi Arabia.

“We have to take into account that the football which we’re in is an industry in which they’re always looking for ways to make money. In the same way that there are special connotations with this country, there was in Morocco too. It is what it is.”
