The coach didn't hide his desire to progress to the big time

Víctor Valdes debuted with a 3-1 win as Barcelona U19 coach on Friday night as he started his new job back at his former club.

Asked if he would like to coach the first team in the future, Valdes didn't hide: "Let's go step by step. It's my first week back at Barça. I am ambitious and I aim for the top. I was the same as a goalkeeper. I'm taking things step by step. I have changed a lot. I like the day to day a lot and seeing what I have around me. We're going to go slowly but I have ambition and was excited to come home. That says it all."

On the current first team, including some of his ex-teammates, he added: "They have a great team. Top-level. We have won things in the last few seasons but there's a bittersweet feeling because there's been no European Cup. That cup has to come home and I hope it's this year because it would make us all happy."

As a coach, he defined himself in the following way: "I am very intense, as I was as a player and I am the same as a coach now. I find it difficult to differentiate between a friendly and an official game. I like good football, taking risks, attacking, going for goal all the time, for the win, taking risks at the back.

"My teams are dynamic when it comes to switching sides, using the space we have to move into. That's what I demand from my players. I am a very demanding coach in that sense and the players know that but also that errors are allowed."
