Tottenham defender Lenglet explains his departure from Barcelona

The French centre-back opened up in an interview with The Times

As Barcelona rebuilt in the summer, one of the damned players was Clement Lenglet, who was told to find a new club and joined Tottenham on loan until the end of the season.

In an interview with The Times, Lenglet explained the reason for his departure from Camp Nou to London.

"I came here for a new experience and I wanted to play more minutes,” Lenglet said. “When you are 27 years old, you want to be involved. That was my first idea.

“In the contract, there isn’t an option [for Spurs to buy]. But we are in October. It’s the beginning of the season and we have to wait before thinking about this. I have to be good on the pitch and help the team. Maybe if everything is OK, we will speak. But it’s too early.”

However, his appearances for Spurs have come in dribs and drabs: he has played just seven games (four in the Champions League and three in the Premier League) out of 15, for 496 minutes. His role is to improve the defence, but the form of Davies, Dier and Romero has made it difficult for him to play more.

With respect to Barça, he added: “I’m not there this year so I don’t like to speak a lot when I’m not in that place but Barcelona is a very big club. “Maybe the last years weren’t really good but in a few years we -- they -- will get better and fight for everything again.”
