Carles Pérez, Abel Ruiz and Ansu Fati are ready to step up in the absence of Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele

Three La Masia starlets all share the same dream: to be part of Ernesto Valverde's squad for the match against Real Betis on Sunday. Will there be room for just one, perhaps two, or even all three? They will find out later today as the squad list is confirmed.

One criticism aimed at Valverde has been his lack of faith, or rather continued faith, in giving some of the more known academy stars a chance in the team. But last week's starting line up showed that there might be a change in strategy this season. Plus, with Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele out injured and Lionel Messi unlikely to be ready for 90 minutes, La Masia could prove vital in patching up the forward line.

Rafinha missed yesterday's training session so remains a doubt for the game too. Carles Perez and Abel Ruiz have been regular faces throughout preseason and in the training sessions so far. Ansu Fati, the Juvenil A star, is a new face amongst the senior squad but no one has any doubts over his quality and ability to step up if needed. Griezmann will be his focal point of attack, a position he looked comfortable in during preseason, but Abel Ruiz could provide a natural striker option should Valverde wish to have the Frenchman in a more 'free' role.

Other options

If Griezmann plays as a 'false nine' against Betis it would open up chances for another wide man. Carles Perez appears to be the most likely after shining in the Japan Tour.

Perhaps the greatest surprise would be if Valverde chose Fati to start. The 16-year-old is someone everybody in La Masia is excited about. He's got all the tools to succeed at the highest level and, fresh after signing a new contract at Barça, could be set to announce his arrival on the biggest stage.
