Samuel Umtiti's reappearance on the squad list is the first step to shipping him out in the Janaury transfer window. The French defender feels better after his knee problems but at Barcelona they don't count on him and are looking for a new home. The club don't want to pay his high wages any longer.
Umtiti will likely get some minutes before the window opens. He wouldn't mind leaving if it is to a club with a good sporting project. Barcelona's deep worry is that his knee injury is chronic. They want him to get some game time and show other clubs his ability to find him a good destination in the January window. The defender would prefer to go on loan for six months.
Benfica were close to signing him but in the end went for Lucas Verissimo from Santos. Everton have asked after him and Juventus, whom Barcelona face tonight, are also interested.
Barca want Umtiti to go to a team where he can play, but also a club that will look after him physically. They think Italy makes the most sense.
