The surprise detail written into Neymar's new contract with Barça

The way the Brazilian will earn his money has changed slightly since he signed his new terms

Neymar signed his new contract with Barcelona until 2021 just a few weeks ago. The agreement was struck in the summer, but it was only completed in October.

The negotiations were complicated due to the interest of various other teams in signing him, but the Brazilian wanted to stay at Barça and took the decision to extend his stay at the club.

The changes to his new deal mean that Neymar’s salary will almost entirely be made up by what he earns annually, whereas his previous deal included many bonuses based on hitting targets.

Therefore, Neymar will no longer receive money for being a finalist in the Ballon d’Or or for the amount of goals he scores. All these bonuses were included in the contract he signed in 2013, but they’ve now disappeared.

As revealed by UOL Esporte, Neymar’s new terms are worth 16 million euros net per season and Barça have taken on some of his image rights for the coming seasons.

Added to that are bonuses for titles won by Barça on a collective level, which could increase his yearly income by 2.5 million euros net depending on the team’s success.

Neymar, until now, was earning a variable salary based on his individual productivity. For the renewal to be forced through, therefore, the Blaugrana had to practically triple the 24-year-old’s salary.

In Brazil they insist that Neymar had far superior economical offers on the table, but he was keen to remain at Barça, convinced that he can win many more titles at Camp Nou than at other clubs.

These titles give him more visibility and advertising contracts across the world, so in some respects make up for the loss of salary on offer elsewhere.
