It was confirmed on Wednesday the right-back would leave Camp Nou

Alves had re-joined the Catalan club for a second spell last November

Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that Dani Alves will leave the club. The Brazilian, who officially began his second spell at Camp Nou in January after re-joining in November, will not be offered a contract renewal. His deal expires on June 30 and he will now look for a European club to take him up to the World Cup in Qatar.

Alves was left out of Barça's European squad but was a regular in LaLiga under Xavi Hernandez and played an important role in the second half of the campaign as the Blaugrana clinched Champions League football, climbing to second place. However, Xavi has finally decided to let the right-back leave.

The main reason is the excess of players at right-back. It's considered a well-covered position. Barça are optimistic they will sign Cesar Azpilicueta from Chelsea. The Spain international is a big target. He had an agreement with Chelsea but the English club have automatically renewed his contract by an additional year and a deal must now be negotiated between the clubs. But Barça are confident.

In addition to the possible arrival of Azpilicueta, Xavi also has Sergiño Dest. The young American didn't play much at first but won the coach around, despite injuries. Xavi thinks he can be useful. He is quick and is improving his understanding of the game. Plus he has shown no desire to leave Barça. He has always wanted to fulfill his contract, which runs until 2025.

Finally, Xavi also has the option of Sergi Roberto at right-back. The midfielder has just renewed his contract per Xavi's request.
