Sergi Roberto was given the all clear for the Catalan derby then ruled out vs. Benfica

The relationship between the Barcelona squad and the club's medical services gets more tense all the time. After various episodes in recent months, another fallout has taken place now involving Sergi Roberto.

The Barça midfielder was in the squad for the game against Espanyol and, just 48 hours later, was missing for the important game against Benfica. It was difficult to understand and angered the player and the coach, Xavi Hernandez, who on Friday didn't hide his desire to make changes to the medical department.

Even though he was not 100 percent for the Espanyol game, Roberto received the all clear and was in the squad. The medical team had given the OK for him to play. As a precuation, and with Benfica in mind, Xavi decided not to use him in the Catalan derby.

Then 48 hours later, the player felt some pain again, which led to further tests. It was a relapse, but something that had not been detected before the Espanyol match, when the player was not completely recovered.

The medical team's check revealed he was not in condition to play and the club announced he was out of the Benfica game. Said situation provoked disappointment and anger for Roberto, who was convinced he would be able to help the team. Xavi was both surprised and resigned when he found out.

It's served to increase the tension between the dressing room and the medical staff. It's not the first time this season something like this has happened. The club's injury list and the number of relapses speak for themselves.
