The 'electoral clause' in Quique Setien's contract at Barça

Despite signing a deal until 2022, the next president of the club will be able to rescind his contract at the end of the 2020/21 season

Despite the widely held belief that Quique Setien has signed on at FC Barcelona until June 2022, it's true there is a clause which allows that deal to be broken before then. The current club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, confirmed in the head coach's presentation that the agreement could be cancelled at the end of next season.

"I don't have the CV but my teams play well," was one of the comments which won over many onlookers this morning. However, Bartomeu's admission about a clause in the deal didn't go unmissed either. "Setien has a contract until 2020 but there's a clause (to break that agreement) in 2021 because elections will be taking place."

This means that at the end of the 2020/21 season, when Bartomeu's time as president officially comes to an end, the new president will have the final say on the coach's deal and could, as his right, opt to bring in a coach of his own choosing.
