Sometimes pride ends up as rudeness, they said in a statement

The council of Cornella have got involved in the latest Gerard Pique controversy on Thursday at Camp Nou.

Pique spoke after the game and referred to Espanyol as "Espanyol from Cornella" multiple times. Asked about why he called them Espanyol from Cornella, Pique replied: "They play in Cornella," grinning.

Espanyol complained about that on Friday, publishing a statement saying they have reported it to La Liga's anti-violence commission.

The council then published a note which says: "After FC Barcelona player Gerard Pique's comments referring to our city, the council of Cornella wants to say:

"1) The city of Cornella does not want to be caught up in the ignorance of a gratutious controversy which tries to discriminate and play cities off against each other, when sport must be a tool to educate and unite society. Cornella does not want to interfere or be part of sporting disputes just because it is a first class city which hosts a La Liga club.

"2) We consider that sometimes pride ends up being rudeness, preventing us from correctly valuing people who form part of a community of which we are proud and where we work to promote respect and equality.

"3) We regret that people with great power and inflence in our society, above all among young people, like football players, end up provoking and stoking up rivalries and confrontations of this type."
