The keeper nearly left after his second season but the club backed him

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is having an excellent season at FC Barcelona, with the club just three points away from winning another title.

It’s his fifth between the sticks for the Catalans and he’s become a reference point at the club both on and off the pitch.

In an interview on German television he revealed his most critical moment at the club.

“After the second season the chance of me leaving Barcelona was there. I had options but I wanted to stay and the club eventually decided for me,” he said. “The situation came from what I wanted, which was to be the starting keeper.”

Ter Stegen had been rotating with Claudio Bravo. The German recalled how he always wanted to play for Barcelona.

“When I was 16 I always said that if I ever left Borussia Monchengladbach it would be to go to Barca.”

The Blaugrana signed him for just 12m euros in May 2014.
