Ter Stegen edges closer to signing a new contract at Barça

Marc-Andre ter Stegen's renewal appears to finally be on the right track. FC Barcelona believe they are making significant progress in reaching an agreement with their number one goalkeeper to extend his stay at the Camp Nou. The club hopes ter Stegen will also relax his stance and that an announcement can be made before the current season finishes. As things stand, both parties are confident a deal can be struck.

Maximum pressure

Ter Stegen's existing contract runs until 2022 but the sporting department know it's important to tie the keeper down to a longer deal. Talks began back in February but the two sides were miles apart on the financial aspects of the renewal. Ter Stegen, who has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, wants a wage to reflect his importance to the team.

Those talks stalled and following the coronavirus outbreak, both sides agreed to postpone things until football resumed. Ter Stegen understands that the economic situation of Barça, as well as football in general, has changed and is open to a compromise in terms of how the new contract will be structured.

Barça are looking to reduce their overall wage bill and that's fundamental if they are to sign the likes of Lautaro Martinez or Pjanic. The club plan to offer ter Stegen a base amount he will earn each season, but one which will gradually increase throughout the five years of the deal. What that magic number is remains unknown.

The club knows ter Stegen is a key part of their team and he's the only player they are considering giving an extension to which includes a pay rise. Neto will be put up for sale in the summer and Iñaki Peña will be promoted to second choice keeper.
