Sergino Dest disconnects too much but Barca have faith

The FC Barcelona of the future that Ronald Koeman is constructing has a Sergino Dest who needs to fit in better than he currently is. Injury to Sergi Roberto means Koeman has leant on Dest more than he might have so far, and he suffered in the 4-1 defeat by PSG. The USA defender was the weakest link in a team that generally was destroyed.

Dest has suffered a handicap of late in terms of the muscle injury that have affected him in 2021. Koeman has also tried Mingueza at the right back slot.

Sergino Dest in attack sometimes gets too detached from the team and Pique has had to correct it on some occasions, calling him back so he becomes an option to pass.

Dest suffered defensively with Kurzawa and Mbappe ganging up on him, two on one, against PSG. Ousmane Dembele didn’t help much so that made things harder.

However on an individual level he could have marked Mbappe better. Ter Stegen was shouting “Stick to him!” during the game. Dest left too much space and when the Frenchman got the ball it was hard to react.

The staff believed he could handle that one on one like with Vinicius against Real Madrid, but Mbappe was another level.

But Dest was not the only one who was poor, with Pique, Lenglet and Busquets equally culpable.

Koeman is sure that Dest will improve. The problem comes from concentration and learning the game. His physical attributes are impressive and optimal for Barca, but he has to mature.

The club will be patient with a player who cost 21m euros and has a good attitude. He’s the first to try and learn how to correct his defects and become a player who can bring more to the team.
