The club do not want to match his wage demands for a new deal

Samuel Umtiti's future at Barcelona is in danger. Negotiations to renew his contract (June 2021, 60m release fee clause), are not going well and the French defender has a lot of other offers to pack his bags and leave at the end of the season. From when the conversations started between club and player, the defender has demanded numbers which Barcelona will not pay.

Umtiti wants to join the second tier salary level of the club, along with players like Andres Iniesta and Luis Suarez, soemthing that the club do not think is correct. For that reason at the Camp Nou offices they believe Umtiti is closer and closer to leaving, and Manchester United may be his destination, with the Red Devils pushing hardest for him.

Jose Mourinho is interested in him and with Umtiti's release fee priced at 60m, he is one of the best options on the market. Mourinho has called him personally to offer him a deal which works out at 9m net per year - the number Umtiti wants to stay at Barcelona.

NO FEELING

The 'feeling' between the two sides is not promising. Barcelona don't like the player and his agent and brother Yannick Umtiti's posture.

Barca usually start negotiations over a new deal with two and a half years to go until the conclusion of the current deal. That would have been in January 2019 for Umtiti, but they didn't mind starting a bit earlier, considering Umtiti a special case.

Umtiti's release clause being set low was a reason to act quickly, as well as moving to settle it before the Wolrd Cup to calm the player and stop a good showing in Russia attracting yet more clubs.
