Dona Miguelina was first admitted into hospital with the virus in December

Miguelina Elói Assis dos Santos, the mother of Ronaldinho Gaucho, past away on Saturday at a hospital in Porto Alegre, where she was admitted in December when she contracted Covid-19. Complications caused by the illness led to her death this weekend at the age of 71.

It was Ronaldinho, on social media, who first revealed on Dec. 21 that his mother was ill. "Beloved friends, my mother has Covid and we're fighting to help her recover quickly. She's in hospital receiving treatment. I appreciate all the prayers, positive energy and affection, as always. Stay strong, Mama," the former Barcelona forward wrote.

Throughout the last two months, Dona Miguelina has remained in Hospital Mãe de Deus. Neither Ronaldinho, not his brothers Roberto and Deise, will make any comments for now. As a sign of respect, the Brazil legend has removed his Twitter profile image and replace it with a black background.
