The Uruguayan defender wants to stay at the club and is in talks to renew his deal

Ronald Araujo’s people wanted to seal his renewal with Barcelona a few weeks ago but because of the intense January market, will have to wait a little.

The player and his agent have told the club their absolute priority is staying at Barcelona, because they feel recognised and appreciated there. However there are important offers from the Premier League that Barcelona have known about. They are expected recognition too in the salary department, despite Barcelona’s economic difficulties. Araujo is clearly a key player for Barcelona and in the years ahead.

Conversations started months ago. Then technical secretary, Ramon Planes, has a good relationship with Araujo’s people, having signed him for the club when he was an unknown. He started the conversations. Planes’s departure stopped them but they have been restarted and a deal should be reached in January.

Araujo only wants Barcelona to pay him for his performance. He’s a clear starter and the best centre back at the club. It’s not a question of raising his deal to that of the biggest players, but at least coming closer. Chelsea, Liverpool and United are interested and his contract expires in 2023.

The clear intention, though, is to stay. He can be a leader at Barcelona for years to come with Gavi and Ferran Torres.
