Robert Lewandowski: Barca's game 10 years ago might not work now

The Polish forward spoke ahead of his return at the weekend against Athletic

Robert Lewandowski was FC Barcelona's star signing last summer. His performances have been very good. The Pole is now injured, but everything points to him making a comeback at San Mamés, an important game in the fight for the league title. The striker sees a double as a possibility. "Everything is possible, but there is still a long way to go. In La Liga, we have a good lead, but we have to do better than in many games, where we have won 1-0. In the Copa, the objective is the final, but we have to eliminate Real Madrid," he said in an interview with the club's magazine.

Lewandowski believes the team are doing better in this second half of the season, although he calls for patience. "We have found the way back to the elite, but we have to be patient. Everything is on the right track because we have young players who need time. In the first part of the season we did things well, but we made mistakes. In this second half, everything is going much better. We have taken a step forward," says the Pole, who regrets the mistakes made in the Champions League.

"The injuries we had made things difficult for us in the Champions League. We had a young team, with little experience. We made mistakes and, if you want to win the Champions League, you can't make mistakes like that," he added.

Help for the youngsters

Lewandowski has become much more than a player, he has become a teacher for the younger players. "I try to help my team-mates. Not only with goals, but also with my mentality and behaviour. I like to give my point of view on the games. I think it can help, especially the youngsters," admits the Pole, who believes Barça's future is secure: "Barça have young players with great potential. With them, the future of the club is assured. It's important that there is a balance in a team between young players and older players and we have that.

Barça's Polish attacker was full of praise for his coach in the interview. "Xavi was a great player and he played as a midfielder, he saw the pitch from a central perspective. He is capable of seeing many things. Playing with the ball, without the ball? He always tells us that we have to be able to change a game by ourselves. Tactically he knows what to do and he always adds value to his words, which makes you listen to him and understand him," explains Lewandowski, who believes Barça must adapt to today's football in their style of play.

"The Barça DNA is to play good football, but you have to understand that football is changing. For example, the way Barça played ten years ago might not work now. You have to find the perfect solution for where you are and the players you have".

One of the keys to Barça's good form in La Liga is in defence, having conceded just eight goals in 24 games. Lewandowski praised his team-mates. "It's good to have a defence like ours for the strikers. We have more security, we can take more risks because we have our back covered. Security makes it easier to score goals and the first step in every team has to be to have a great defence."

Finally, the Polish striker talks about his future. He is very comfortable at Barça and would like to stay for many years. He has a contract until 2026. "I don't think about how many years I will be at Barça. I still think I can play a few more years at a high level, but I don't know how many. I'm sure it won't be one or two. It will be more. I hope I can stay here for many years. Now I understand the meaning of Més que un Club".
