Riqui Puig: This is a tough year for me, I'm getting little action

The young midfielder netted against Elche which was his first Barca goal

Riqui Puig came on in the 87th minute as Barca faced Elche and just two minutes later he scored the second goal to calm the Catalans’s nerves. It was a header for 2-0, and taking into account that the Matadepera-born midfielder is only 1m 70, and Elche defenders are not exactly small, he deserves plenty of credit.

“I scored the goal but you have to thank Frenkie de Jong for the pass. I haven’t scored many headers. It makes me happy, thanks to all my team-mates,” Riqui told Movistar.

“It’s a hard year for me, I’m getting very little time but like my father says we have to keep fighting and learning and this will make me stronger.”

On the team, he added: “I think we’re taking a fair few steps forward. It’s a hard month with a lot of away games, extra-times, lots of players with overload, these wins help us a lot, that’s the truth.”

On the title, Puig quipped: “We can’t make more mistakes, Atletico have a lot go games to go, nobody has won a league in January.”
