With the news Raphael Varane might leave at the end of the season, Madrid could turn to De Ligt to replace him

In the last few days, Real Madrid have considered making a move for Ajax's Matthijs de Ligt to cover the potential loss of Raphael Varane in the summer. De Ligt is one of the most sought after players in the upcoming transfer window with FC Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain, Juventus and Bayern Munich all interested in the young Dutch star.

Madrid's first choice would be for Varane to commit his long term future to the club now that Zidane is back in charge. However a move for De Ligt now might be too late as Barça and Juve have already spoken to both the player and his club about a €70m deal.

Barça believe they hold an advantage over Madrid when it comes to De Ligt as they've been in constant contact with the relative parties over the last few months. Josep Maria Bartomeu, alongside Òscar Grau and Albert Soler, will be in Amsterdam on Monday and Tuesday and could take advantage of their business trip to speak with Ajax over a possible deal to reunite De Jong and De Ligt at the Camp Nou.

Members from Barça will also be in Holland tomorrow to watch them face Germany in a Euro 2020 qualifer. It's expected that many other teams will have representatives at the match, including Juventus. It'll be interesting to see if Real Madrid will be in attendance too.
