Real Betis insisting on Nico Fernandez loan

| sport

The Betis technical team have pressed again this week to try and bring in midfielder Nico González. The Andalusian team is still thinking about the FC Barcelona player to reinforce their midfield and are keeping the door open to his arrival as long as the conditions of the agreement depend on his form.

Nico, who does not fit in Xavi Hernandez's plans due to an excess of players in this area -- the arrival of Gündogan, a new competitor for a spot, should be confirmed soon -- knows that if he stays at Barcelona he will hardly have any opportunities. He has a contract until June 2026 and, at 21 years old, what he needs is to play in order to continue improving.

Last season, faced with a similar situation, he agreed a loan move to Valencia, where he enjoyed 1,409 minutes in 26 games, all in La Liga (he scored one goal). Nico Gonzalez was not available to the coach in the Copa del Rey or in the Spanish Super Cup due to an injury that sidelined him for 12 games.

Betis want Fran Gonzalez's son as an alternative to cover the possible departure of Guido Rodriguez, although they also have other players on the table, such as Marc Roca, who plays for Leeds United. Valencia, however, have also contacted Barça to renew Nico's loan deal.

Betis' sporting director, Ramón Planes, knows perfectly well Nico's technical conditions. Planes was assistant to Éric Abidal in the FC Barcelona technical secretariat between June 2018 and August 2020, being appointed technical secretary, a position he held until November 2021. He joined Betis in May 2023 and signed a contract until June 2026.
