PSG's fear of Barca contributed to Tuchel sacking

The French side binned coach Thomas Tuchel on Christmas Eve. Happy holidays!

PSG took the decision to sack Thomas Tuchel as coach of the club on Christmas eve. There are various reasons why, but one of them is the club’s obsession to win the Champions League. They are up against Barcelona next and the club don’t believe he is the coach to help them past the Catalans. They want the new coach to have some time to work with the squad.

PSG made it through the group phase in first place in a tough fight with Leipzig and Manchester United but they did not convince.

Leo Messi’s presence alone is enough to strike fear into PSG’s heart and they think Ronald Koeman’s side could well be better than they are now by February. PSG reached last season’s final but lost to Bayern Munich.

Tuchel did not have a good relationship with a lot of PSG’s big name players and he even admitted so in an interview with Sport1. “PSG have a lot of influences and sometimes it’s hard to keep the lads happy,” he said. “That’s part of the challenge this club has.”

Tuchel arrived in Paris in 2018 under Antero Henrique as sporting director but a year later he was replaced by Leonardo. The coach did not click with the Brazilian, arguing openly about signings.

Mauricio Pochettino may be the solution; he is the main candidate to replace Tuchel.
