Barcelona are out of the Champions League after a brave performance in Paris

There was no remontada, but no collapse either. In fact, Barcelona were by far the better team in Paris, but they could not find a way past old foe Keylor Navas.

The former Real Madrid stopper made nine saves, including keeping out a Lionel Messi penalty, as Barcelona failed to make it through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Argentine had already beaten Navas once, with a sensational long range strike which swooped into the top corner like an eagle, levelling out Kylian Mbappe’s opener from the penalty spot.

The French forward slapped home after Clement Lenglet clumsily trod on Mauro Icardi, a very soft penalty.

Ousmane Dembele missed chances, Sergino Dest had a drive tipped onto the crossbar, Busquets twice came close. Barca threw everything at PSG, but they could not make it through.

Going in at half time without the lead they deserved took the wind out of Barca somewhat and they were not as impressive in the second half.

They took a draw with them, which was no mean feat after the first leg tonking they suffered.

“We’re eliminated, that’s what counts in this sport,” said Koemna. “But we take good feelings, we had chances, above all to make it harder for them.”

An improvement, then, even if there is still a long way to go.
