The Barcelona defender is closing in on retirement but isn't ready to quit just yet

Gerard Pique has still not decided if he will return to the Spanish national team to take part in the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

The Barcelona defender, who missed the final stretch of the season with an injury after playing for months with pain, is taking things one day at a time and thinking short-term.

The rest afforded to him recently, plus the upcoming post-season, has done him well and he hopes to start the next campaign in full fitness.

Pique, 35, is convinced that he will still be able to compete at the top level next season after a string of good performances since Xavi Hernandez took charge in November.

From there, he will decide on what the future holds for him. Above all, if he will continue into the 2023-24 season at the age of 36, but before then if he will play for Spain again after retiring four from international football four years ago.
