Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba won't recover in time for weekend trip to Sevilla

Neither defender will now be seen in Blaugrana until after the international break

Barcelona’s defensive problems will remain when they visit Sevilla’s Sanchez Pizjuan this weekend. Neither Gerard Pique nor Jordi Alba, who both missed the loss to Manchester City, will recover in time for Sunday’s game.

Despite Barça announcing Pique would be out for three weeks, there were hopes he would be back in time for the trip to Manchester, although in the end there was no ‘miracle’. And he won’t be ready for Sevilla, either. It’s that the club don’t want to force the centre-back’s return if his ankle injury, which he picked up against City at Camp Nou, is not completely healed.

Alba, who has a hamstring problem, won’t be ready for Sevilla, either. The left-back was only said to be out for two weeks and it was hoped he’d be back for this weekend, but after rushing him back for the City game (he originally picked up the knock on Spain duty) he is unlikely to recover in time.

Neither, therefore, are expected to join up with the Spain team for November’s international break, which kicks in after this weekend’s round of fixtures.
