Ousmane Dembele's injury frustrated an advanced transfer out

The player now must sign a new deal or miss the whole season in the stands

The route to take with Ousmane Dembele is now clear for Barcelona. The main idea was to sell the French forward but the injury he suffered in the Euros has put a spike through that and now they have to renew his deal so he’s not a free agent from next summer and able to talk to other clubs from January 1, 2022.

Barca had taken the decision to put him on the market but it was scuppered by the knee tendon problem he suffered against Hungary that needed surgery. He was operated on in Finland and will be out for four months approx from June 28.

With the transfer plan frustrated the club are working to get him to renew his deal, which expires next June. He cost 105m euros to sign, plus 42m euros in variables, back in 2017 from Borussia Dortmund. Given the investment Barca have made, they can’t let him walk away for nothing.

While he doesn’t sign a new deal, once he’s recovered, Barcelona will leave him in the stands and not use him.
