Official: Lionel Messi banned for two games for Supercopa red card

Messi will miss the matches against Cornella and Elche this week

Lionel Messi will be suspended for two games after being sent off during Sunday's 3-2 Supercopa final defeat to Athletic Club in Seville.

Carmen Perez, the president of the RFEF's competition committee, decided the santion referring to Article 132.2.

Despite the speculation Messi could miss more games, in the end he will only sit out Thursday's Copa del Rey game against Cornella and Sunday's trip to Elche in La Liga.

Return with morbo

Messi's return -- pending on Barça's progression in the Copa del Rey -- will be against Athletic Club at Camp Nou on Jan. 31.

It will be a chance for Messi to meet Asier Villalibre again, the player who he struck to get sent off in the final at the weekend.

"It was a clear red for me," Villalibre said after the game. "I put my body in the way to stop him getting ahead and he got angry, throwing his hand towards my face. I think it was a clear act of aggression.

"It's normal, that impotence, in that minute. When you're losing a player can get frustrated, no pasa nada. There's no need to look for controversy, all teams make fouls."
