The former director of football at Getafe will join Barcelona as their sporting director alongside Eric Abidal

Barcelona have officially announced the signing of Ramon Planes, the previous director of football at Getafe, as their new sporting director.

The arrival of Planes is part of the restructuring that the board started when they brought in Eric Abidal as the new director of football, replacing the outgoing Robert Fernandez.

The first meetings took place some weeks ago and in the last few hours the deal was pushed over the line after Getafe released him from his existing deal. Crucially, too, Getafe didn't ask for any compensation.

Planes' arrival now completes an area of the club which Barcelona felt needed to be reinforced.

The man from Lleida fits the profile that Barcelona were looking for. Planes has extensive experience as a director of football and an incredible knowledge of the transfer market, especially in South America.

Aside from that, in his recent time at Getafe, he also demonstrated an excellent ability to manage the dressing room

With this profile, Planes will be a key support figure to the new director of football, Eric Abidal, and the General Manager, Pep Segura.

After playing for and later coaching Lleida, Planes moved to the boardroom in 1999, becoming the sporting director at L'Hospitalet. He later fulfilled the same role at Racing, Alaves, Lleida, Espanyol, Tottenham, Elche, Rayo Vallecano and Getafe.
