The English club want to sign the France international to help them beat the drop

Ousmane Dembele's future is further away from Camp Nou than ever. The Frenchman's decided not to renew his contract with Barcelona and Premier League clubs are pushing for him to move now and not in the summer. Barça have been in contact with Newcastle United for days and both clubs are interested in reaching an agreement before Jan. 31.

As Manchester City did in 2008 with Robinho, making him their star signing and the leader of their team, Newcastle want to do the same with Dembele. The Magpies, recently taken over by Saudi Arabia's public investment fund, want to imitate City as they fight to avoid relegation.

Since being taken over in October, the English club have been one the richest clubs in football. If not the richest. They want to reach the Champions League eventually but the current reality is much different. They find themselves in the relagation zone in the Premier League.

They have so far signed Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid and Chris Wood from Burnley for a combined 50 million euros but now want to make Dembele the new hero on the Tyne. The ball is in Dembele's court. Barça want him gone to make a saving if he doesn't renew and Newcastle's need is urgent at the bottom of the table.
