De Jong played 90 minutes as Barça were taken apart by Bayern on Friday

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong says "a lot of things must change" after the club suffered it's heaviest ever European defeat on Friday as they were beaten 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinal in Lisbon.

"I think that today showed we have a lot of problems in the team," he said. "We know we have to make a lot of changes. It's difficult, we apologise to the fans. I think we have to change many things."

The Dutch international said Barça felt they could beat Bayern, especially when they made it 1-1 early on: "We believed we could win the game. In the first 15 or 20 minutes, they scored early, but we levelled and we had two good chances, so we believed in it, of course. You could see that at the beginning.

"But they were much better than us. I don't think it's to do with talent, I think it's to do with intensity and hard work. We have to change these things. It's a huge disappointment, not just for me, but for all the club, because this club is accustomed to winning trophies.

"It's the biggest club in the world, we have to perform much, much better than we have done tonight."

Finally, De Jong didn't want to speak about if Manchester City or Lyon will be able to beat Bayern: "I think City are also a really good team, as are Lyon. But it doesn't matter too much right now. Bayern were really good tonight and, of course, deserved to win."
