Memphis Depay's confession to the Barça locker room

| sport

The Dutch striker wishes to fulfil his contract and is not planning to leave this window

Memphis Depay finds himself staring at the exit door at FC Barcelona. After the signings of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha and the renewal of Ousmane Dembélé, adding to the existing roster of strikers including Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the Dutchman has virtually no chance of regular playtime. The club plans to cash in on the player who is entering his final year of the contract.

As reported recently here in SPORT, however, Memphis will allow his departure to come easily. Presently, the attacker has not shown any interest in the offers that have come his way. He wishes to fulfil his last year of the contract and has no plans of leaving at this time, and confessed to the Barça dressing room that "even if six strikers come, I will continue". The Barça board must speed up the exit operation to register the new reinforcements, but Depay's case will make it complicated.

The Dutchman alluded that he arrived last summer as a free agent and took a pay cut. Therefore, he is baffled by his price tag of 20 million euros and is not too keen on the club cashing him in. He remains unaffected by the rumours surrounding his future, evident from his relaxed demeanour during the tour. He has been syncing well with his teammates and performing at a high level on the pitch.

Mutual termination of his contract could be a possible solution to the 'Depay case'. If he can arrive at a Champions League club outside of England at a reduced fee, he could then demand a good contract. It looks like the soap opera has just begun and will last for a while.
