Javier Mascherano spoke about who will become Barça's fourth skipper

He was asked if defender Gerard Pique should be the man for the job

As Javier Mascherano leaves for China, Barcelona will have to search for a new fourth captain.

At the start of each season the player's vote on the four captains, with Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Lionel Messi and Mascherano the current leaders.

With Mascherano gone, there's a vacancy for someone to join Iniesta, Busquets and Messi.

Asked if Gerard Pique should take on the role, Mascherano gave the Catalan his backing, but said he doesn't need an armband to be a leader.

"The lads will vote on the fourth captain, like in recent years," Mascherano said when asked to opine on the matter.

"Geri’s a person with a lot of importance in the group and could do it, of course. But even not being [one of the] captains, he has still been a captain.

"He is a completely natural person who can be a leader without the armband. He can have that role in the group without being a captain."
