Javier Mascherano says Lionel Messi's new contract is "good news for Barcelona" but added that his internatiional team-mate's future was never linked to his.
"The fact that Messi has renewed is good news for the club, because of his quality and the player he is," Mascherano said in Miami, where he was taking part in an event with the Football Tennis Association, who he is an ambassador for.
"But each person has their own career, their own life. Your can't depend on someone else's life to decide what your future is. I've never had any doubts about staying."
Mascherano said he's fully recovered from the injury which he ended the season with and is now focusing on the new campaign with coach Ernesto Valverde.
Last week he was at Messi's wedding to Antonela Roccuzzo and he said he was "happy to have been able to be present at something so important for him in his life."
