The World Cup winner believes Barça should have let Leo leave

Diego Armando Maradona has given an extensive interview to the newspaper Clarin to celebrate his 60th birthday. The legend of Argentine football spoke about Lionel Messi's situation at Barcelona and his desire to leave Camp Nou in the summer.

Maradona was very clear on the issue: "Barcelona did not treat him as he deserved to be treated," he said.

Despite the fact it's been weeks since Messi announced he would stay at Barça this season, his future is still a big topic back in his homeland.

Maradona said: "I knew it was going to end up badly and I thought that Leo was going. The same happened to me. Barcelona are not an easy club and Leo's been there for many years now and they didn't treat him as he deserved.

"Leo gave them everything, he took them to the very top. He wanted a change of scenery and they told him no."

Maradona had a similar situation when he was a Barcelona player but was able to leave the club, eventually signing for Napoli.
