The English club need to know if they have a chance, if not they will make other plans
Frenkie de Jong could be one of the keys to Barcelona's transfer activity this summer. The club have not hidden their cashflow problems and with the strength of options in midfield, they could be tempted to sell the Dutch midfielder if a big offer arrives.
Manchester United have shown the most interest so far and have contacted the player's camp, but they want a definitive response as soon as possible as they build a new project under new coach Erik ten Hag.
If De Jong gives them a definite 'no' they can move on from the Barça man and focus on signing another midfielder in what is expected to be a wild summer transfer window.
De Jong has reiterated his desire to stay at Camp Nou. He made a big financial effort to come to the club and is convinced he can now play a big role in their rebuild.
But there are also doubts. There is competition for places, while Barça's financial limits could force them to entertain offers or even push him out the door.
United are ready to bet big on De Jong but if he does not want to move there they need to know now. The fact they are not in the Champions League could count against them.
They cannot wait any longer though and for that reason have given De Jong an ultimatum. It's in the player's hands now.
